State of North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources Approves Pluris’s Latest Membrane Bio-Reactor Wastewater Treatment Facility

February 2016

Pluris Hampstead, LLC has received final operating approval from the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (“DENR”) for its new high technology membrane bio-reactor (“MBR”) wastewater treatment facility in Pender County, North Carolina. Pictured above is an evening photograph of the wastewater entering the treatment facility and on the right is a photograph of the wastewater leaving the MBR plant after treatment. The treated wastewater is sent to high rate infiltration ponds as part of its reintroduction back to the environment.

Senior Environmental Engineer with DENR, Jim Bushardt, PE said, “Pluris’s MBR treatment facilities represent the highest level of wastewater treatment in the state of North Carolina”. Randy Hoffer, Regional Manager for Pluris commented that the project was made possible by the successful partnering of Pluris, Pender County and several developers who will be able to build homes with Pluris bringing wastewater treatment to the region. Hoffer further said, “The facility will be used as a local center for surrounding schools to educate and demonstrate to elementary, middle school and high school students sustainability with wastewater treated to levels safe for the environment which will help to conserve drinking water”.

Pluris plans to use reclaimed water from the MBR facility for both a freshwater aquarium and outdoor arboretum to grow threatened North Carolina native plants.  Students visiting the facility will each receive a young plant to take home and plant.
